[1.0] INTRODUCTION
[1.1] LORDS OF THE MILKY WAY (here after just Lords) is a game of galactic exploration and conquest, technological and sociological advancement, politics and intrigue, supply and economics.

It is set against the backdrop of empires trying to advance from their mother Quarter-Kilo Parsec and become the one and only Lord of the Milky Way.

The object of the game is to become the undisputed ruler of the Milky Way through any means at your disposal, including open warfare, covert operations, espionage, assassination, and economic blockade.

Alliances can be made and broken at a moment’s notice as you dictate the course of your star nation’s future.

Each Sector, and their corresponding star systems, that is conquered, colonized, or lost, affects your production planning, while popular unrest and rival political factions will guide internal policies.

The main technological advance that makes the whole game ‘future’ possible is by the usage of ‘Jump Engines’. The Jump Engine relies upon the creation of a phenomenon called a Mitchell-Thompson Wormhole, along with the Jump Engine’s ability to replicate the negatively polarized Dark Energy to join two widely separated points in space-time. This allows a ship to ‘jump’ instantly from one point in space-time to another. In this manner, all relativistic space-time problems are neatly sidestepped and communications between star systems light years apart is made feasible.

There are two versions of the game, both of which may be modified (and made more complicated) by the use of the optional rules.

The basic version of the game is known as the Basic Strategic Game and it uses the rules not marked Advanced Game only. In this version all play takes place on the large star map known as the Galactic Display.

The Advanced Game uses the same rules sections and adds in the rules marked Advanced Game. The Advanced Game uses both the Galactic Display and the smaller Tactical Display.

Both games use a common set of counters and markers. Both games also share the same set of game situations and scenarios.

It is strongly recommended that the Players acclimate themselves to the strange terminology and unusual game system by playing a few ‘learning’ games using the basic rules.

The one feature that inexperienced gamers will have the most difficulty getting used to is the three-dimensional quality of the advanced game and the demands that such an environment makes upon the Players.

LORDS makes provisions for one to six players, although more can be accommodated with additional components.

Learning the different aspects of LORDS has been facilitated by the inclusion of several scenarios, each of which focuses on a particular facet of the game. The scenarios successively increase in complexity, adding new rules and player options with each new scenario encountered.

Details of which rules sections you will need to be familiar with are outlined in the individual scenario notes in the Scenarios/Charts/Unit Listings booklet.
